Les Automatistes: Collective Expressions

February 15 – March 15, 2020

Location: Charles & Ethel Cohen Family Gallery, 3rd floor

Les Automatistes: Collective Expressions drawn from the AGW’s collection represents a number of bold, expressive works by the artists who were the originators of a significant art movement in Montreal called Les Automatistes. Inspired by the writings of French Surrealist poet and writer André Breton, the artists began painting and working in a spontaneous manner without predetermination. The collective’s de-facto leader, Paul-Émile Borduas also led the creation of their manifesto Refus Global in 1948 which offered an anarchic perspective on society expressing the need for major changes to be brought about in the conservative atmosphere that existed at the time.  The exhibition contains works by Paul-Émile Borduas, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Marcelle Ferron, Marcel Barbeau, Jean-Paul Mousseau and Pierre Gauvreau.
